ROTC/JROTC Recognition Program

The SAR awards the ROTC Medal to foster the principle of the "citizen-soldier", exemplified by the Minutemen of Revolutionary War days.  The award program is conducted in three (3) phases: Local Chapter, State Society and National Society to ROTC or JROTC cadets who are selected for having a high degree of merit with respect to leadership qualities, military bearing and general excellence.  The recipients are selected by the Commanding Officer of the ROTC or JROTC unit, who should be given full latitude in making the selection.

The SAR ROTC Medal is approved by the United States Army, the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps, and the United States Air Force.  Each service has notified its ROTC and JROTC units of this approval and has authorized presentation to its cadets or midshipmen.

For ROTC or JROTC units with fewer than 500 cadets or midshipmen, one medal will be awarded each year.  The Arkansas State Society supports many High School JROTC Units and University ROTC Units.

LOCAL CHAPTER AWARDS:
ROTC Silver Medal with Certificate

Arthur M. & Berdena King Eagle Scout Award

The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) invites all Eagle Scouts (under 19 years of age) interested in the American Revolution to participate in the Arthur M. & Berdena King Eagle Scout Award. The contest is open to all Eagle Scouts who are currently registered in an active unit and have not reached their nineteenth birthday during the year of application. While the preliminary rounds of the contest begin at the local level, Scouts may eventually advance to the state or national levels, eventually held in June during the annual SAR Congress, and awarded up to $10,000.

College plans do not have to be completed in order to receive the cash award. Three cash awards are given: the National First Place Winner receives $10,000; the Runner-up receives $6,000; and the 2nd Runner-up receives $4,000. Scouts may apply more than one year if he meets the age requirements, but no more than $10,000 total may be granted to any one Eagle Scout. Prizes and recognition may also be awarded at the SAR chapter and society level. Each Eagle Scout must complete an application form, a four-generation ancestor chart, and a 500-word patriotic themed essay.

The competition is conducted in three phases: the local chapter, state-level society, and national phases. The competition is usually entered at the chapter level, though in some cases, the competition may be entered at the society level. Applicants may not enter at the national level. Contest entrants need complete only one application for the SAR chapter-level competition. The application of the chapter-level winner is forwarded to be used in the society- and national-level competitions by the SAR as appropriate. A complete set of rules, along with the application for both the applicant and the sponsoring SAR members, can be found below. Please be aware that the local application deadline dates may vary, so interested applicants should reach out to their local SAR Chapter for further details.

Patriot Research System Volunteer

Message from Gary Green Vice Chairman, National SAR Patriot Records Committee, 3 Jun 2019:

First -Thank you for your OUTSTANDIING contributions to the Patriot Research System (PRS).  We have accomplished quite a bit since January 2018.

[The SAR Patriot Research System is looking for volunteers to input data into the system. This is a great way to "give back" to our organization by volunteering your time from the comfort of your home.]

If you currently volunteer please take a look at the individual accomplishments identified in the Volunteer Summary Report from the PRS. If you have made inputs to the PRS and do not see your name on this document, your inputs may not have been reviewed/published yet. This is the source document from which the determination of whom has achieved the Lafayette Medal are made.  The final tally will be determined in mid-September for 2018-2019.

We have a formula that awards time towards the 40-hour time requirement for achievement of the medal.  We have determined that on average it takes 15 minutes to input a biography, update a patriot record or index/connect a member to his patriot as well as reivew/publish the input.  It takes 30 minutes to input the application data for each patriot.

If you are interested in helping contact Gary Green at garyogreen@gmail.com.
